IAR Assessment

The reading test contains fiction and nonfiction pieces for students to read.  Multiple choice questions will be answered about each piece.  Students will also be expected to answer extended response questions.  We will practice this writing in detail throughout the school year, but will focus more on it after Christmas break.  Students will learn the format of how to answer an extended response question appropriately so that they are well prepared for the IAR Assessment.  Much of this will be incorporated into our regular curriculum, but we will practice test taking strategies to ease student anxiety.

The math test contains a variety of math problems, most of which students will be familiar.  The majority of the test requires students to be good problem solvers.  The most difficult part of the math test will be when students are asked to write and explain their answers.  Students will be given multiple opportunities to practice this difficult task prior to the test during our regular math lessons throughout the year.

You may practice with your child by going to the Illinois State Board of Education's website at www.isbe.net and clicking on the IAR link.  From there, you can find practice tests.  Some may be printed while others can be completed online with immediate results.  I encourage all parents and guardians to view this site so that you are aware of the material covered on the test.  Students who are familiar with the format and expectations of the test will have less anxiety about the test, which many times, will produce better test results.
